Azerbaijan, Baku

Crystal of Baku

In 2012 the final of the Eurovision Song Contest takes place in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan. And for seele, too, this major international event provides an excellent stage for playing a leading role in textile architecture once again. ALPINE Bau Deutschland AG was awarded the contract for building Baku Crystal Hall in August 2011, and it was around the same time that seele’s bid for the membrane construction was successful. more

United Kingdom, London

Tate Modern 2

Since 2000, a former power station in the London Borough of Southwark has been the home of the Tate Modern Museum. This gallery of modern art now needs an extension and so architects Herzog & de Meuron have designed a new 11-storey tower in the form of a truncated pyramid with a twisted plan form to complement their original conversion work. more

Germany, Koblenz

Forum Mittelrhein Koblenz

A new urban centre, designed by Benthem Crouwel Architects, is being constructed in the very heart of Koblenz. The complex, consisting of extensive retail and cultural facilities, frames a busy plaza facing the old quarter of the city. The distinctive element is the amorphous glazed structure housing the cultural centre, triangular on plan with rounded corners. more

Luxemburg, Esch-sur-Alzette

Maison du Savoir

An extension for the University of Luxembourg. A new “Cité des Sciences” is emerging in Belval, formerly the centre of the steel industry in south-west Luxembourg. The heart of this new complex will be the “Maison du Savoir”, the house of knowledge, a striking landmark housing lecture theatres, offices, chairs and restaurants in this communication centre for the campus. more

USA, Long Island

Long Island House

A new private residence is being built on Long Island where merely a few dunes separate the Long Island House from the ocean waves. This new summer home - designed by 1100 Architect - is a two-story, flat-roofed building, essentially a rectangle in plan, but with one long side at an angle. The upper floor cantilevers out the width of one room on the west side and on the seaward-facing, south side, part of the roof over the kitchen and living area slopes from the first floor to the roof. more

USA, Miami

Miami Art Museum

The new Miami Art Museum, designed by Herzog & de Meuron, is currently under construction on Florida’s Biscayne Bay where the three-story structure will, upon completion, stand on a broad plinth with slender columns supporting a louvered roof with long cantilevers and natural hanging vegetation on all sides, providing natural shade for the building and its three exhibition levels. more

Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Dhahran

King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture (ITHRA)

Situated in the hart of Saudi Arabia's oilfields, the King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture represents a design that has never before been realised in this form. The buildings housing the cultural amenities, including a library and a concert hall, shine in the sunlight like five bare pebbles. more

Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Riyadh

King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Center (KAPSARC)

Designed by Zaha Hadid, this energy R&D facility, the largest in the world, is currently under construction near the Saudi Arabian capital Riyadh. The extreme climate of the desert is responsible for the thinking behind this design: a series of cells clad in concrete panels. more

New headquarters for the European Central Bank

The new headquarters for the European Central bank (ECB), designed by the Coop Himmelb(l)au architectural practice, is under construction on the site of a former wholesale market to the east of Frankfurt’s city centre. more

In 2011 Berlin will finally get an international air traffic hub worthy of a capital city in the form of the new Berlin-Brandenburg International Airport (BBI). more

Extension to Frankfurt Airport

Frankfurt Airport is Germany’s largest and the same time one of the world’s most important air traffic hubs. Gate A-West is being extended, in conjunction with Gerkan, Marg & Partner, to take account of the increasing volume of air traffic.

Repulse Bay Staircase

Repulse Bay, an upmarket residential district, boasts one of the most beautiful and most popular beaches in Hong Kong. London-based architects Carpenter/Lowings Architecture & Design is responsible for modernising one of the coveted maisonettes with a rooftop terrace commanding a view over the bay. more
