An extension for the University of Luxembourg. A new “Cité des Sciences” is emerging in Belval, formerly the centre of the steel industry in south-west Luxembourg. The heart of this new complex will be the “Maison du Savoir”, the house of knowledge, a striking landmark housing lecture theatres, offices, chairs and restaurants in this communication centre for the campus. The architects from Baumschlager Eberle have designed a narrow, 180 m long horizontal block that cantilevers beyond the two almost 9 m high pedestal blocks that lift it off the ground. An 18-storey tower rises above the western block. This tower is a reference to the chimneys of the industrial past of this location, creating a bond between new and old.
Characteristic of the seemingly industrial character of the horizontal block and the vertical tower is the combination of window elements and sunshading system made from square aluminium elements in the form of a curtain wall. This is where seele has proved itself to be a dependable partner with an eye for the right details. In addition to the aluminium window elements, seele is also responsible for a transparent, square, all-glass structural glazing element in insulating glass, which ensures that plenty of daylight reaches the large lecture theatre situated in the basement underneath the courtyard below the horizontal block.
