In 2011 Berlin will finally get an international air traffic hub worthy of a capital city in the form of the new Berlin-Brandenburg International Airport (BBI). Based on a design by Meinhard von Gerkan and Hubert Nienhoff, in conjunction with Hajo Paap, a new complex, a new “backbone”, is being built parallel to the runways. The central point is a terminal building glazed on all sides with a transverse pier underneath.
