Extension to Frankfurt Airport - Frankfurt a. M.

Frankfurt Airport is Germany’s largest and the same time one of the world’s most important air traffic hubs. Gate A-West is being extended, in conjunction with Gerkan, Marg & Partner, to take account of the increasing volume of air traffic. In the purist design of the façade, rectangular metal panels alternate with large expanses of glass. On the southern elevation, shading elements keep solar gains to a minimum.

seele is responsible for the southern elevation where aircraft from all over the world dock over a length of 650 m. More than 560 façade elements are joined together to form an elongated façade, broken up at regular intervals by the protruding gates. Three façade elements are required per grid-line, one on top of each other making up the total height of 15 m. Each of the 5.20 x 3.60 m elements is made up of 270 individual parts, which add up to an impressive weight of just over 1.6 t. The façade is characterised by double solar-control glazing with an excellent thermal transmittance. In some areas the glazing is positioned with the help of conically cut glass bearings. This eliminates interference with the radar to such an extent that all aircraft movements can be handled safely.

High safety requirements and an extremely tight construction timetable, in which the ongoing operations at the airport have to be taken into account, are fundamental requirements for this construction project. The fast project processing necessary is guaranteed by 3D planning using the “Pro E” program, which allows the structures to be realised with maximum accuracy and designs to be transferred directly to the CNC fabrication.
