Nuremberg Trade Fair

Nuremberg Trade Fair

Since April 2010 the entrance hall and forecourt at the “Mitte” entrance to Nuremberg’s trade fair grounds has been enjoying the shelter of a roof of steel louvres with transparent ETFE cushions, measuring approx. 10 000 m2 in area. The roof forms the architectural link between the forecourt, the central, glass entrance hall and the open area within the grounds. Visitors are now protected from the weather when they arrive at the trade fair grounds by underground train, bus or taxi. This area bathed in daylight links the exhibition halls, the park, the congress facilities and a new, multi-functional congress hall.
The principal design element here is a roof of steel louvres, supported above the ground on 16 m high steel columns. On plan the roof is an elongated rectangle with an extra, pointed triangle at one end. Transparent ETFE cushions span between the steel louvres. Two-ply cushions are used above open areas, but a three-ply design over the air-conditioned entrance hall for better thermal insulation in the winter. Certain parts of the cushions are printed with patterns of dots to prevent excessive levels of heat and light in the interior in the summer.
The roof is about 256 m long on the northern side, about 182 m long on the southern side, and about 58 m wide.
The air-filled ETFE cushions are approx. 3.50 m wide to match the spacing of the steel louvres. They reach a maximum length of 36 m between the steel columns and 6.40 m in the cantilevering perimeter bays on the longitudinal sides. The shape of the roof with its pointed triangle means that cushions of various shapes were required – triangles and rhombuses as well as rectangles.
Both inside and outside, visitors are assured of a bright, friendly atmosphere below the protective transparent plastic cushions supplied by seele cover GmbH. With such a prestigious but also functional entrance zone, Nuremberg Trade Fair is well equipped for further trade shows and events.
