Guangzhou South Railway Station, Guangzhou

One of the largest transportation hubs in Asia was completed in October 2010 after three years of construction work. Situated in the heart of the Pearl River Delta, the new Guangzhou South Railway Station serves a catchment area with more than 300 million inhabitants and brings together various transport systems: inter-city and express rail traffic, trunk roads and the urban road network with buses and taxis. Once the final phase is completed, this new transportation centre will be able to handle up to 300 000 passengers every day.

The station building covers an area measuring approx. 450 x 400 m. The roofs over the 28 tracks have spans ranging from 50 to 100 m and are reminiscent of the shape of banana leaves. Below ground, three underground lines are integrated into the complex, which has a total of six levels.

A curving roof structure over the central waiting hall at 90° to the platforms links the eastern and western sides of the station. The transparent construction marks the station’s main thoroughfare and therefore also aids orientation in this giant complex.
This roof with its ETFE cushions spans more than 68 m and tapers in the middle, roofing over the waiting zones on the upper level without the need for any intermediate columns. At both ends, the transparent roof widens and terminates over the station entrances in the form of canopies with a covering of ETFE foil. A total of 20 000 m2 of single- and double-ply EFTE material has been used for the roof covering, the first time that this material, supplied by seele covertex, was specified for a station in China. Further daylight enters the station through the rooflights – fitted with a total of 13 000 m2 of PTFE supplied by seele covertex – along the middle of each roof section over the tracks.

The experience of seele covertex in the manufacture and installation of roof coverings was in great demand for this major project, likewise the associated planning and project management skills.
