7 More London Riverside, UK

Together with Foster & Partners, seele created the administrative building 7 More London Riverside, located in the heart of London near the Thames and Tower Bridge. Set around a polygonal courtyard, the building has a deep recess where it faces the Thames, and only the ground floor and a number of upper floors are connected, the latter via galleries. Here, it shows passers-by both its “faces”: one whose smooth façade has a technically more reserved design and, surrounding the ground floor, the “zigzag” façade, a structure whose construction was particularly tricky.
High quality and as prefabricated as possible: these were the objectives of the building plan. All façade elements were fully pre-assembled and delivered to London ready for installation. The elements for the ground floor, with dimensions of 3.40 by 7 metres, represented a great challenge with regard to transport and assembly. Although based on an aluminium structure, the elements weighed up to 1.6 tons. Divided into as many as eight fields per element, they allow a modular approach in which, depending on use, glazing, sheet-metal panels or technical modules can be utilized.
Built from small sections, the zigzag façade’s technical finesse and detail are impressive. The two façade elements were mitred at the corners, a visually clean and technically demanding solution. Numerous special solutions were developed to reach the required level of structural safety. Frames with aluminium louvers were added to provide sun protection.
