The construction of the Soccer Arena in Munich necessitated the rebuilding of the Fröttmaning train station. The station had to be expanded from two to four tracks to accommodate the tens of thousands of people attending events at the stadium. The newly constructed bridge over the underground train depot connects the stadium with the station.
The Bohn architectural office developed a steel membrane structure that ascends gently from the site, forming an arched roof structure approximately 200 metres long that spans both platforms. The load-bearing structure consists of box-shaped supports, each resting on two membrane panels on “tree supports”. Between the main girders, eight pipe elbows run parallel to the tracks to shape the membrane and serve as the bias. The sides of the 25 membrane panels (each 8 x 25 metres), which are set at a right angle to the axis of tracks, are attached to the box-shaped supports. At the same time, these panels serve as drainage channels. Twenty-three of the panels have a smoke outlet at their apex, which is protected against precipitation by a small arched roof. At night, the structure is illuminated from below. The station’s translucent membrane surface made of Teflon-coated fibreglass fabric gleams far into the distance.
